View Full Version : King Python....an Apac Custom

Grnlntrn asked me to paint up an extra ROCC he had. I had envisioned one thing...but today I thought I'd try another route. Heres what I came up with:

I didn't paint the gun turrent - lots of moving parts and I figured the paint would wear off too quick. The gray flows nicely with the silver stripes in the pattern.

The inside I didn't really detail...anyone who has one, knows the inside is pretty cool. I just added some cobra decals to the jet and inside area.

Also...to anyone deciding to customize these...heres something I ran into.

When disassembling the cab area...there is two screws that hold the canopy area on that are dead center above the tires. I tried...there is no way to get them out without removing the tires. I tried that for a bit...but couldn't accomplish it. Instead...I cut the cab area (look on the pics...you will see the smoke stack and the gray box on both sides of the cab) the screws are inside those areas...and they are long screws. Luckily...the plastic can be cut with a utility knife to remove the canopy. There are plenty of screws holding it on...those 2 screws really don't do much for the canopy.

Very cool custom Apac, did you use the shirt or stocking method?

Actually I used a mesh bag (cut up). We had these bags for the kids socks when they were babies...I cut it up and gave it a shot. I also enlisted the wife as I needed an extra set of hands. She was a good sport though, I gave her some gloves so I didn't paint her hands - got her to hold it down in some of the "valleys".

Thanks for the tip, I'm still waiting on mine, and with any luck I'll start working on my Command Hiss when I get it.

I may be looking for input, while I'm doing that.

When I read the title, I had planned on jabbing some one-liner about bringing me a shrubbery, but now I'm nearly speechless. 'Tis beautiful m'lord! Python Patrol was always one of my favourite Joe elements, and you bloody well hammered it out of the park. Bravo! Also, whatever lighting you have in the first pic adds a killer reddish glow to it.

Hey Apac, you might be getting quite a few more requests for customs. :shifty I posted a link to your pics over at YoJoe! in this thread:

What can I say, it is awesome work, and I am not the only one that thinks so! :salute

Dude...I got alot of requests for painting. Grnlntrn and deano both bought stuff from HTS. They are going to end up here to be painted. :lol

I went with pythonizing on this as it doesn't have too many valleys so the mesh "sits" well for the most part.

Looks like I won't get started on the temple project anytime soon. :lol

Thanks BD!!

Believe it or not...that is the walmart brand Color Place paint (.97 a can here).

I used Kelly Green, Gloss Black...then the silver stiping is actually Rustoleum Aluminum metallic finish.

06-25-2007, 05:31 PM
is there like a primer or something that can be put over the paint job to make it less fragile to rub off or give it a nice gloss look? I mean what do factories use?

06-25-2007, 05:40 PM
Krylon Matte Finish clear coat...I use it to topcoat it before assembling it back together. :thumbsup
