This is a vehicle from the Lanard Corps! line that I envision being used by the Oktober Guard- they used a vehicle like this in their first appearance. It' is called the dynamo. By the way, anyone know Russian? What would the name be in Russian and how would you pronounce it?

Hey Apocalypse,

Thanks for the encouragement. As a matter of fact, I have been considering such a move, although I am not sure what legal issues there might be in printing posters of ddp and Hasbro copyright characters.

But I have been considering having some of these printed at large size and selling them at the GI Joe convention this year. Maybe online too. I myself want to get a large copy of the night raven.

I'll keep you updated on any progress with printing posters. Take care!

CV just as an example, I know they can be done at Staples, but that might be more of a one time display sorta thing. A 24 x 36 color print is $4.20 a sq ft. 24 x 36 is 6 sqft, so the print alone is $25.20 Lamination is $1.20 a sqft, and it can also be mounted on foamcore which is amazing, but that's like $40 for the whole kit and kaboddle. Not to bad like I said for the display maybe, but mass production at Staples would kill you. A print shop might be a better option.

Oh of course smaller sized posters would be less.

Thanks, my customs are what they call ... uh.... Lazy Boy Customs. There is some painting in some of them. Code viper, Harley, tomax and Xamot, Cobra Commander in business attire. And some sculpey too, which I found a lot harder than I thought it'd be. But there are a lot of lazy customs there too.

I thought it was funny that Hasbro actually came out with a Tomax and Xamot in a similar outfit- I still prefer mine though because I made the pants more businesslike at the bottom (with creases, not jackboots) and gave them ties.

Thanks Scrapiron-scavenger. Nice Mindbender custom, by the way.

I used to be an admin at the old Cobraaa.com Web site before that kind of fell apart. It was a major reason why I decided to get my own- every time I found a Web site I could post on that was cool, it would disappear. That still happens to me, by the way- the Mission FACES site I was collaborating at also basically shut down. Life happens to the best of us.

Keep the faith, man.

I really dig the Napoleon-esque version of Serpentor on horseback you have on your site. It has inspired me to start a pharaoh Serpentor sketch and sculpture. I wish I had your graphic art skills... I feel too old-school with my art sometimes.

Color-Viper
04-11-2007, 01:57 PM
Good call, Syrlandevale,

The pic of Serpentor on horseback (http://www.jmort.com/graphics/cobra/serpentor.jpg) was actually done from a photo of Napoleon on horseback. I can't find the original on the Web, but that's exactly what I used. I wanted to convey the historical aspect of Serpentor and how majestic he would be on a horse, for example. In my original idea for that picture, I was also going to have the backs of the heads of Cobra Vipers in the foreground, as if Serpentor were riding in front of his troops before a battle. Kind of like in Braveheart how he stirs the troops up before combat. I did that pic for a trading card and the people I did it for weren't that excited about him being on a horse so that's why I did this new Serpentor pic. But I still like the old one.

In that image, I always envisioned in my mind that before Serps went out, Dr. Mindbender insisting that he ride on his air chariot to review the troops, but Serpentor insists on riding a horse because he knows, from experience, that it will inspire the troops more.

Thanks!

Hi Sing sing Johnny,

I use Adobe Photoshop to colorize my work. If you poke around on my Web site in the tutorials section, I have a couple of tutorials (http://www.jmort.com/tutorials/lineart.htm)that gives you an idea of what I do. My process has evolved a bit since I wrote those, but they are good to get a beginner started.

If you'd like to know more, I can recommend a couple of the CDs from Brian Haberlin's Digital arts tutorials Web site (http://www.digitalarttutorials.com/). They have a good step by step approach that is more involved and a bit different from what I have on my site. I have the beginner one and the Danger Girl Comic book coloring one.

I am a computer Graphics instructor and cartoonist, so I get a lot of practice with these tools on a fairly regular basis.

Here's one that my friend Shanehai drew that I colored and added effects to... Wraith.

This was a fun one to do with all of the effects.

As I worked on this, I couldn't help thinking about the fact that this guy, who single handedly fought Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow simultaneously to a standstill - is dead now. Beaten by the Baroness hitting him with... wait for it... a rock to the head! Not even a rock to the head- a rock to his bullet proof helmet! (Apparently not rock-proof). And then he sits there while she removes his helmet and, after a lot of talking, she shoots him. I mean seriously!

And then after that she beats up Flint even though he has a gun on her like he was some dang rookie. I am a little baffled at why Baroness is now so formidable. It stretches credibility a bit for me. I get that she' ticked off, but that doesn't make her Batgirl.

Oh well. Anyway, yeah, here's Wraith- before he was taken out like a chump.

"Hey wraith, look out for them rocks on the ground! You might slip and fall and get knocked unconscious or something!"

Thanks, Syrlandevale. I haven't always felt that my pencils and inks were as strong as my colors- some pieces are better than others. I usually have my best work when I am drawing a model or from good references. Such was the case with Daina. Here she is, since you mentioned her...

http://www.jmort.com/graphics/cobra/daina.jpg

With the snow wolf, I had some good references for icicles and after studying them for a bit, I was able to use Photoshop to recreate some of those effects using various tools.

So much personality in that one. I just love it. It is so rare in modern artists to come across a character design that actually looks individualistic. I get jealous of some of the capabilities of others, yet their faces and statures seem to replicate with every person. Not so with Daina, here. Bravo. The angle of the gun in the fore-front also flows in the right-downward angle that the human eye naturally shifts in, so it feels more comfortable; and the contrasting angle of the background brings out the image more... perspectively speaking.

Hey gang,

I've been quiet. Too quiet. Well, actually, just busy.

Unfortunately my full time position was eliminated about a month ago so I've been spending time looking for new employment. And this has left me with much less time to spend doing digital coloring. By the way, if anyone knows of a good job for a great technical trainer and killer Photoshop artist, let me know. My resume (http://www.jmort.com/documents/John_Mortenson_resume_web.doc) is on my web site too.

First up, Crimson Shadow Guard

I really dig the color scheme to this one. Hazy autumnal, or post-apocalyptic gleam. Especially fantastic job on Wild Bill. You breathed a lot of life into him. Killer glow on the headlights as well. Bravo! Now bring on Scarlett...

Awesome! Even better than your last Kwinn. Great breath effect, and extra points for amalgamating heritage with symbolism. The angle and backlighting makes him appear even more overbearing (pun intended) and menacing as well.

Right on with Kwinn, no Browning though but still right on.

My next illustration is Copperhead... this is one I am doing for Dutch Redneck. It is Copperhead in his exclusive Master Collector format.

Say, if anyone has an extra one lying around, feel free to send it to me.

I am not quite done with the inks stage. I usually go back with a thicker marker and make some lines thicker to make the line art pop more.

The I'll add the digital colors. I'll keep y'all updated.

Hey gang,

Okay, I am finally getting my act together enough to start selling through my web site. I have created a merchandise page (http://www.jmort.com/merchandise.htm)on the site where you can buy some of the original artwork from me and also Shanehai. If there is a piece that you want which is not up yet, you can request it.

If you would like a color print of my work, contact me via pm and I will be happy to make arrangements with you.
Thanks!

Here's another new piece I am working on- the sting raider.

I love working on underwater images. This should be pretty neat once it is all colored up.

I also am drawing this one on artboard so I will have a pristine original to sell if anyone is interested.

That is so wicked. I still say that you should submit your work to Hasbro and FORCE them to hire you!

Could you imagine CV card backs? Not just the custom ones (like I have hanging on my wall :D) but "real" Hasbro issued card backs?

INSANITY I SAY!

Great work as always, CV :salute
