Anybody ever try using Fishnet Stockings to put the scale pattern on anything? (Python Patrol??)

I seen them used on OCC the other night...and it turned out hella cool, just like scales.

I'm gonna grab a pair...see how it turns out. Was wondering if anyone tried this technique yet?

I never even heard of that, but it sounds like it should be cool!

If you want to pythonize, you might want to talk to Python Viper over at Joecustoms.com He is a really cool cat and we have chated in chat several times.

Here is a thread that he explains how he "pythonizes" his vehicles/figures:

and if you don't want to read the hole thing, here is a breakdown:

It came to me when I saw my Griffey Jr jersey from when he was with the Mariners hanging in my closet. The material is a mesh and has all those little almost diamond shaped holes.

Needless to say, I didnt shred that shirt to make these customs, I had a plain white holey mesh shirt that cost me 10 bucks. Plus its ratio of coverage to holes was better, the diamonds wouldnt be too far apart or too close together or too big or too small. So I got out the scissors, picked up the paint and wala!

Remember Krylon Burgundy, paint it on, let it set! Then I took the mesh and draped it over so the pattern was diagonal to the vehicle. Then I used string to tie the cloth over to hold it in place. Dont stretch it too tight because the fabric will dig into the paint and leave the ripples. Spray on the black and silver and then cut the strings after drying then slowly and carefully pull the mesh off just in case it is catching the paint and there you go.

Here is a pick of Decimator, the paint doesnt agree too well with the rubber helmet so there is only one coat on there, hence the light red color. I will post close ups soon when I get a chance to take more pics.

I know others use mesh jerseys...but I think the stockings will be quicker.

They are snug...and will conform to most vehicles without deep valleys.

An APC will be the ginny pig here.

Thanks SS...I seen that wiki...and was gonna do that technique.

Just that last night...I seen the painter for OCC use the stockings...it was quick and looked great.

The stockings won't work on all vehicles...but for an APC (as example)...I think they will work. I'm gonna give it a shot.

so if i play with womens stockings im called names but if you do it for "customising" then its ok? now i see how it works here.......

so when you say play you mean wear, right blue?:p

If you decide to pythonize a T.D. or Flagg, Rosie O. Size shouldn't be too big. :hellfire

Nobody around here sells goddamn Fishnet Stockings???

Went looking yesterday...nobody had them. Told the wife...you go to Victorias Secret tomorrow while I finish painting...they will have them.

Lo and behold....THEY DON'T HAVE THEM??? FTW????

I'll have to get BD to snag me a pair off one of the ladies of the evening down there...and send them to me.

Why wait til evening? I'm sure his mom can give them to him first thing in the morning, that way he can get them out in the mail same day :wink :lol

So did you ever use fishnets?

Ultra Magnus
09-24-2007, 06:55 PM
Nope. I think he ended up getting either mesh shirts or a mesh laundry bag-thing.

09-24-2007, 11:14 PM
Rid is correct...I used mesh laundry bags...they have a more octagon pattern that looks more like a snake scale IMO.

09-25-2007, 01:20 AM
i see but fyi the fishnet stockings work fairly well the only problem is that they stretch and sometimes make oddly shaped "scales". well that and the fact that you have to tie them in alot of places on certain vehicles. i used them on the python moccassin.

09-25-2007, 01:25 AM
Wow...good to know gijoe!!

I figured they would work...but just couldn't obtain them.

This is very similar to what I used:

09-25-2007, 01:34 AM

fish net application resembles the python figures more than the vehicles

09-25-2007, 02:26 AM
you can get pretty close to the vehicles if you don't stretch them out very much

09-25-2007, 03:28 AM
Is that the pattern you got on the water mocassin gijoe071681?

Sort of a "chain link fence" effect? Or is it different...I can't tell from your pics.

09-25-2007, 01:22 PM
kinda sorta yeah but my pattern is in smaller diamonds and thicker lines i'll see if i can get a better pic to better show the pattern.

09-25-2007, 01:50 PM
i dunno this pix seems a little better (no flash this time) hope you can see the pattern better:

09-26-2007, 01:53 AM
its a little better...but still fuzzy. :lol

The mesh I use produces an octagon shape, does the fishnet produce a diamond shape?

09-26-2007, 01:56 AM
yeah the fishnet does produce a diamond shape i'm thinking about trying your idea using the..... sweater dryer bags? i think the octagon shape would work well. do the bags you use stretch?

09-26-2007, 01:59 AM
they stretch a little, but not much. You don't want them to stretch as the pattern will get distorted.

09-26-2007, 01:38 PM
exactly thats the problem i had with the fishnet stockings the first time i used them i stretched them too far and got a weird pattern in spots. plus points where the paint just went under the the mesh

09-26-2007, 11:59 PM
The mesh will do that also...if you are too close with the paint or if the mesh isn't flush against the area. Granted all areas you won't get flush against with the mesh...in those areas I back off a little more from the area before I spray.

don't use nylons.go to any outdoor store and ask for some spawn bag netting.Works so much better and smaller scale so easier to work with

01-05-2008, 02:28 PM
spawn bag netting? what is this spawn bag netting? and apac here is a clearer pic for you:

01-05-2008, 10:15 PM
I like the pic...thanks!! :thumbsup

I'm sticking with those bags I picked up...I like the result, and they are cheap. :lol
